Introducing Our Next Chapter: Oxygen Alliance is now Uptime Alliance
Introducing Our Next Chapter. Oxygen Alliance is evolving into Uptime Alliance. Discover our journey to transform global healthcare infrastructure.
New name. Same Formidable Alliance.
When we started this journey in 2021 as Oxygen Alliance, this community rallied together around a single, urgent crisis: getting functional medical oxygen to the patients who needed it most at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Phoebe Khagame
Director, Uptime Alliance
But as we worked alongside biomedical engineers in hospitals across low- and middle-income countries, a larger reality became impossible to ignore. Oxygen was just one piece of the puzzle.
Today, up to 70% of all medical equipment in sub-Saharan Africa sits out of service.
This challenge is one we were ready to take on and our approach and interventions had to evolve. We realized that to truly support these health systems, our mission had to evolve post pandemic. We are no longer just responding to an emergency; we are pursuing a grander vision; a permanent systemic transformation of the entire biomedical infrastructure.
That is why, today, we are thrilled to announce that Oxygen Alliance is officially becoming:
What is changing?
Our Name
We chose the word “Uptime” because it reflects our ultimate metric of success—ensuring medical devices actually work when patients need them.
Our Look
You will notice our new visual identity rolling out today, including our new “Power Pulse” logo in Green. It represents our always “ready to go” approach required to keep healthcare technology running.
What is staying exactly the same?
Our DNA
We intentionally kept the word “Alliance.” This work is impossible without our community of partners, biomedical engineers, and donors. Our relationships remain our strongest asset.
Our Independence
We remain a neutral, vendor-independent organization dedicated to prioritizing equipment functionality over acquisitions.
Our Methodology
We will continue to collaboratively drive change through three core interventions:
Advocate
Mobilize players and resources for policy and ecosystem shifts (Stakeholder Engagement)
Educate
Collect and disseminate data, and provide continuous professional development (Situational Analysis, BEST-LMIC Journal, Webinars, Coaching and Mentorship)
Innovate
Develop resources for the biomedical ecosystem (BME Konza app, STEP-BME)
This evolution reflects a deeper alignment with you, our community. It grew directly out of the connections we’ve built, the ideas we’ve exchanged through shared learning and network-building, and our shared vision to transform the medical equipment ecosystem. We are stepping into this next chapter embodying the shift we experienced post-covid, but we are bringing the exact same heart and commitment with us.
We would love for you to read the full story behind our new identity and what it means for the future of our work.
If you are as excited as we are about this next evolution, reaffirm your commitment to ending equipment downtime and stay connected to the journey ahead.
Thank you for being such a vital part of our story. We are so excited to build Uptime Alliance with you.
Warmly, Uptime Alliance(Formerly Oxygen Alliance)
